he British Special Air Service regiment, the SAS, is one of the world’s most elite and secretive military organisations. It operates in the clandestine world of Iraq, Afghanistan – and who knows where else. It guards its secrets, and even its history, carefully. Its origins, like its operations, are cloaked in mystery and myth. Those who know the regiment think there’s only one part of the story of the SAS that should ever be told. It’s the story of how and where the SAS began. It’s the story of one man: David Stirling. And the band of misfits and rule-breakers who were with him on Day One: The Originals. Effectively, it’s the story of the birth of modern Special Forces. SAS: The Originals is that story. Conventional wisdom has dictated that the story cannot be told, because Stirling and The Originals took their secrets with them to the grave. This is not the case however. 25 years ago, Stirling and the surviving Originals gathered at a secret location and put their stories on the record. SAS: The Originals is based on those stories. It’s the birth of the SAS not just in their own words of the men who were part of this elite band of brothers, but it’s on film, in their own voices too. Their stories are brought vividly to life, with reconstructions based on the detailed accounts of Stirling and The Originals themselves, alongside never shown before photographs of the SAS behind-the-lines wartime operations.
