Prime Minister Bruce Golding addressed the ceremonial launch of the programme of activities to celebrate Jamaica's 50th anniversary of Independence on 20 October 2011. The Prime Minister said "it is going to be a celebration... for there is much for us to celebrate." The Prime Minister urged all Jamaicans to join the celebrations "take charge of the activities in your communities, come alive, make it work," he said. "Let this celebration not be just a celebration of the last 50 years, but let it also be the launch of the next 50 years. Let it be a statement of our commitment and our dedication to make Jamaica, truly, the place of choice for us to live, work, raise our families and do business."
