This very early map of Battersea is difficult to match up to many features that exist in Battersea’s current layout. Apart from fields existing where now there are roads and buildings there are also many well known later features of the area which are missing: Battersea Bridge and Albert Bridge, Battersea Park and the many railway lines that criss-cross the area. However, it is clear to see that the hub of bygone Battersea was centred on the old high street and its waterfront with the Thames. Where the estate is now situated then there were fields; in fact the area was known as ‘Battersea Fields’. From the map there is evidence of areas of strip farming or ‘shots’ as it was often called. Amongst other things Battersea’s market gardens were renowned for their ‘Battersea Bundles’ – high quality Asparagus.
