Latchmere Baths not only played an important role in the recreational, social and political life of Battersea, but its independent artesian well water supply was adapted to provide water for the nearby Latchmere Estate. In those days Baths were not just swimming pools. Given large numbers of people did not have proper personal or clothes washing facilities in their homes, they could wash at the Baths. The baths had been built in 1888/89 by the Commissioners of Baths and Washhouses, and at some date were taken under the control of Battersea Vestry.
