DOCUMENTARY BIOGRAPHY: FREEDOM WRITER/ DIRECTOR/ PRODUCER: SAPNA RAMNANI How are we bound by our emotions? Can we be "free" from our desires and attachments? This documentary explores the bonds between parents and children. It attempts to uncover the experiences of parents, who find it difficult to cope when they are forced to live without their children. This documentary was my first truly independent production after completing my Masters. It cost £6,500 to make and was funded by the Millennium Commission. 'Freedom' was a challenge to make since I was solely responsible for the whole production. In the process of researching the film, I had to broach difficult and intimate subjects with people who were not known to me. It was vital to gain their confidence without either compromising the quality of the film, or abusing trust. This documentary includes interviews with two separated fathers who have been forced to have bare minimum contact with their children, their emotions are revealed on camera. Also a mother expresses her anguish for her son when she was forced to make the decision of sending him away to a special boarding school that caters for his disability. 'Freedom' seeks to answer the question, "What does it mean to be truly free?" This film was screened in March 2003, at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies) in London. I enjoy the challenges that production offers and I would like to continue my career as a filmmaker. SYNOPSIS: 'Freedom' was my first truly independent production after completing my Masters.
