Stoppila Sunzu converted the winning penalty after three successive efforts had been missed in a long and nervy shoot-out that totalled 18 kicks. But the match might not have gone to the shoot-out had Drogba not ballooned a 70th-minute penalty well wide to deny his team victory inside 90 minutes. The error repeated Drogba's miss in the 2006 final, which the Ivorians lost to Egypt. Last night's defeat was another near miss for the Ivorian's golden generation, who had been expected to win African football's top prize at the last four tournaments but failed every time. Two of their English Premier League players -- Manchester City's Kolo Touré and Gervinho, of Arsenal -- missed kicks in the shoot-out. What a fitting tribute to the players and others who lost their lives from the nation who were the definition of underdogs.
